Welcome to my stop of the Foundation 2 Fabric Tour!! It’s such a privilege to be included in the Sassafras Lane Blog Tour, I’ve loved following Shayla’s journey in the quilting and fabric world for a long time — I actually met her for the first time at Quilt Market over a decade ago. Over the years, I’ve had the joy of joining a few of her other blog tours featuring her masterful rainbow collections. You can check out those past posts here:
When this year’s fat quarter bundle arrived at my house, I’ll admit — I was a little stumped at first. I knew I wanted to make a bag, and my first thought was a patchwork design. I love making the All the Things Tote because of its quick and easy construction, so I decided that would be my project.
On the day I sat down to sew, I started folding all the fabrics in rainbow order and thought, you know what — I don’t want to do patchwork after all. I wanted to really lean into the rainbow order of the collection. So I measured the length of a fat quarter against the diagonal width of the smallest size of my All the Things Tote — and thankfully, it was a perfect match!
I cut 24 strips measuring 1.75" wide (one from each color in the collection, minus the low-volume, gray, and black prints). I cut my bag body piece of Soft and Stable two inches bigger than the pattern dimensions, marked a 45° line, and used a stitch-and-flip method to add all the stripes.
After finishing, I realized I could’ve added the lining during that step to quilt it directly to the bag — but alas, I didn’t! Instead, I pieced together some of the low-volume FQs to make a large enough lining piece, pin-basted the layers together, and started quilting with a neon pink Glide thread. I'm totally obsessed with the texture it added and the way it turned out.
I love how the quilting turned out!! After finishing the Bag Body I decided to move on to the pocket! I found an FPP star pattern on Etsy that PERFECT block with exactly 24 colored spaces that allowed me to make a rainbow blocks. I was thrilled with how the pocket turned out! You can easily customize this pocket with any 8" block (8.5" unfinished) design. Grab the Double Star Quilt Block here. Designed by Ten Cow Quilts.
I finished the last pocket using the same piecing and quilting method as the bag body, but with 1" stripes — and once again, I was able to fit in every color!
Projects like this bag remind me just how fun it is to create, customize, and play. I hope you find time to enjoy that same process in your own sewing and quilting adventures. 💕

And don't forget to add in your sew in labels!! I love adding labels along bindings and even under the Handles!
